Salerno, Italy’s Waterfront

Planning and programmatic interventions notwithstanding, the fragile conditions running the full length of this particular stretch of coastline are a result of both coastal erosion and the city of Salerno’s development.
Our project provides for the reclassification of a total of five miles of the southern Tyrrhenian coast. Salerno, which belongs to the region of Campania, currently lacks a clear relationship with the sea; those spaces neighboring the shoreline are leftovers without any clearly defined identity. Like other coastal cities, Salerno has turned its back on the sea, viewing it as a potential threat from which to protect itself rather than a valuable resource. This project first tackles the need to safeguard the entire waterfront through a system of underwater seawalls some distance off the beach.
The proposal lays out a series of spaces supporting a variety of areas at the level of beach and city. They take their formal shape in response to the suggestions that emerge from the city’s changing character as it turns its face to the sea.
Reinterpreting the traditional “Lidos” or seaside resorts allows us to free up the waterfront promenade and engenders a system for linking new architectural elements arranged all along the shoreline.
In the final stretch, our proposed intervention consists of a large natural space serving the dual roles of a collection point and urban park. Its fingers will stretch toward the sea and provide sand deposits that can later be used to consolidate the beaches up and down the coast. On the one hand the system of dunes, fresh- and salt-water ponds and related plant life will bring about a natural space that relates to the mouth of the Fuorni River.
The city doesn’t turn its back on the Mediterranean; it identifies with it. In its reinterpretation of the spirit of the Italian “Lido,” the resulting landscape repairs Salerno’s citizens’ fractured relationship with the sea.
